My Amiga500 refurbish project

Introduction:
This blog entry, is my story on how to bring back a broken lady. It is sort of dear to me, as the Amiga 500 was a machine that I instantly fell in love with, back in 1988 when I saw one for the first time in my life. I remember sitting there, and just admiring the case for a good part of the first hour. While someone just played games. I was mesmerized by the futuristic and new design. The machine was like any other computer that I have ever seen at that time. I was instantly in love. Now.... Looking at the state of this machine, I have come to the conclusion, that it is not possible to bring it completely back to stock and factory state.
The case was broken in multiple places, and it is quite yellow. So I have decided on stuff like giving her a new makeup. Some lipstick here and some rouge there... Yup. Talking about spray painting the old lady. Floppy drives are hard to come by as well, and in this case, it will result in a Gotek drive.
The machine is a Revision 5, model 3 (according to "Big Book Of Amiga Hardware"), and the keyboard was a red light model. It has Kickstart version 1.2, and OCS chipset. 512k of Ram and will be upgraded with an additional 512k of ram.

That all said...
Here is my story on my refurbishing of an old girlfriend. And I will be updating from time to time, when new stuff is done. Just don't expect any fast paced work, as I have decided to do it on as low a budget as possible.

Date: 2018-July-02:
As I have swapped a working Amiga Tankmouse with a dismantled Amiga500 in bad shape, then I have used the evening to get some life in the old lady. (nope.. Not talking about dance hall party and martini)
The first thing I did, was to power her board on. And wait to see what chips became warm. Everyone, except Gayle became warm, so I unplugged the board and took out all the chip from their sockets. Cleaned each pins with cue tips and IPA. Then gave the sockets a little alcohol and reseated each chips two times. Except for Fat Agnus, as I did not want to take it out if I did not need to. Then came some life. More accurate 9 short blinks and one long blink on the power diode on the keyboard. Some googling revealed that it was indeed the Fat Agnus that had issues. I took it out and one pin was badly corroded. It was all black, so I scraped the pin, cleaned it with IPA and reseated it.

Now there is life in the little lady.... So I connected a floppy drive and inserted Budbrain Megademo. And it ran with sound, stable image until second half, then it would crash. I suspect it is because the Amiga has Kick 1.2 and not 1.3 like the newer 500's. The bad thing is that my Rev.5 board will not start with a Kick 2.1 (37.175) kickstart. Oh well... Need to get a 1.3 then or just run some kind of burnin test.

 
Anyways...
As I said. It is in really poor state. Board seems to work. It is missing one joystick port. It has green corrosion on serial and parallel ports, and the Audio connectors have some white corrosion kind of stuff on them, preventing good contact with the audio cables. The case is cracked yet can be fixed with some plastic-welding (Acetone + abs plastic = glue paste). The RF shield will have to go. It can not be salvaged.

The good part, is that I have 9 extra loose serial plugs, that can be used for joystick ports. And things look positive as of now.
Tomorrow, I will have a look at the bottom part of the case, in order to clean it up. And then I will start to take a look at the keyboard.

Date: 2018-July-03:
Finished cleaning up the board and gave the chips some more cleaning, before reseating them yet again. Only thing to do, is a couple of new joystick ports. One is missing, the other is really bad. I tested with a couple of games, and it loads perfectly. Runs budbrain demo all the way through. I ran systest. Ram, sound and video test OK. I really think that I can pull this off, and now the old lady smells like a pub. 


It was time to fix the bottom case and the plastic inlay, that goes between the bottom RF shield and the mainboard. This cleanup really took some time. It was not battery acid, though it was all rust from the RF shield. The shield was so crusty, that it had gotten holes. They were not big, just tiny ones. I used warm water, dish wash soap and a splash of alcohol. Used a nylon sponge and to get the last rust out that had buried it self down into the plastic, I used a small stiff knife, to scrape it off. Before it was a train wreck, now it looks kind of decent. Still tiny traces of rust left, so I need to fix that on a second run. I think it took me 3 to 4 hours or something like that. My hands are itching and are extremely dry now.






The journey continues. The old lady had her buttons cleaned and had them put back on. When replacing the keycap's, I took notice that the Caps-Lock diode is a red one. I was under the impression that they used to have a green diode on the Caps-Lock. I know that the old keyboards used green and red diode. And that Commodore at some point changed it to green and yellow. Shure I know that the old chicken lips keyboard had a red diode, yet those are rare keyboards, and they are the only ones that had mechanical keys. So I am really surprised to find a rubber dome (with springs), that has a red diode in the Caps-Lock key.
Anyway... From nasty to acceptable. I really do not want to take the entire keyboard apart if it is working. For now, a good surface clean will do. Here in Denmark, they add something to the rubbing alcohol, that makes one sick if one drinks the 97/98 percent proof rubbing alcohol. It leaves a kind of sticky residue, and is perfect to clean keyboard springs in. I think it will prevent more rust from forming. So I have used it to clean the springs. The keyboard is dead. Tested it with systest. So now I have to get another one. I might find another Amiga in bad shape, and see if I can put together one complete system. After some time, I have made contact with a fellow Amiga user. He has a working Amiga keyboard and he is willing to make a swap with some hardware of mine.

So. What is exactly wrong with the old keyboard, some might ask. Well. 1/3 of the keys are working fine. 1/3 is all dead. The last keys will activate a lot of keys at the same time. As an example. Then if I press caps-lock, then every single key on the same horizontal row, will activate. I have tested it with the tool called "systest". It is not odd/even-cia, as there is no difference if I swap them. Is it the keyboard matrix or it is the membrane? If it is the membrane, then it does not matter, as I will be getting that replacement keyboard anyway.





Date: 2018-July-05:
I been playing with acetone. Yeah… Fun stuff, and good times.
Today I started to weld the broken top part of the case. I am lucky, that it is only small pieces of a half to one millimeter that are missing. The job seems straight forward to fix. For this job, I am using pure acetone and a tiny brush with natural hair. The way I am working, is to moist the cracked surface, wait a tiny bit until the plastic is beginning to dissolve,, and then press the parts together until it feel like it is binding. Then it let it sit and harden. I have done two out of three spots, were the case have been broken. When it is hardened, I will use the old broken trapdoor cover, to make small rods to reinforce the case from the backside, and make sure it will be able to take stress in the long run. I will make ABS/acetone paste as well, using the same plastic, dissolved to a paste in acetone. To make a kind of plastic cement.
What I did not know, is that the type of plastic that Commodore used, becomes a kind of raspberry-jam-pink'ish color, when exposed to acetone. This means that I have to do a paint job on the case. This is not a problem as such, as I have thought about spray painting, if something goes wrong. The pink'ish color are only cosmetic anyway. The good part, is that the structure of the case have been fixed.

As this is the first time that I do this at all, then of course the job is not perfect. It is misaligned by a tiny bit, though it is acceptable, when taking in, that I did it without any alignment tools or anything like that. To me, it looks ok and passable. Case-work not done yet, though I am getting there. Slow and steady…






The welding of the case are now complete... Not the best job. It is after all, my first time doing this. I added some reinforcement rods on the back. The material that I used, was small pieces of the trapdoor cover. Wich were broken years ago, and only been held in place with tape. No loss, as a replacement can be found on eBay for next to nothing. The finished repair job, is not the best in the world. Going to paint it anyway. I just have not found any colour that I like yet. Thinking about warm orange, earth toned brown or some other kind of 70's palette of cosy color.

Regarding using pure acetone. BE CAREFUL… This shit is hardcore. Use a well ventilated workspace, and do not breath any fumes in, directly above the acetone. Be aware that you never ever, overdo how much acetone you use. It will dissolve plastic fast and furiously. Use a small fine brush for the job, and make sure that you only moisten the surfaces slightly. When pressing together, then only use as little force as possible, or you will have plastic crawling out. And acetone will not work on every type of plastic. The bottle I purchased my acetone in, are made out of some kind of plastic as well.





Date: 2018-September-06:
More soldering work. The Amiga500, was missing one joystick port, and the other was in bad shape. It was rusty and green and had a white layer here and there. I removed the one remaining connector/port, and cleaned all solder pads up with IPA. Found some spare ones, that has never been used, and soldered them in. I need to go over my work on a few of the pads, and will wait until tomorrow, when there are more daylight. I will attend the sound ports as well. I have two spare ones, that I can use. The ones on it right now, are just too damaged.

Both ports are working. I did a quick test setup, running "systest" and used my newly build power cable this time. One step closer to a second working 500 in my collection. Later this month, I will be having a visit from that fellow Amiga owner. He will bring a keyboard and an RF shield. Then we will test it out and do a little trade with a C64 floppy drive that I have. Keyboards are not that rare, though this is a Danish layout and they are rare, unless I buy a complete unit.



Date: 2018-September-07:
Audio ports are now changed as well... I still have to change the ports for external floppy, serial and parallel. That however is a job for the future, as I have no spare parts for those.
Next up, I need to find a new floppy drive and I need to get that keyboard and the shield.
Finally. I need to paint the case in some funky colour. Then I have brought an Amiga500 back to life. One can actually see how bad the original ports were in the picture below.




Date: 2018-September-16:
I found a cheap keyboard on eBay, for a little under 25 Euro plus shipping. Received it on Friday, and today I began to move the Danish key caps from the dead keyboard to the new one. It went well, and now I have a "new" and working Red-Light with danish key's. I was really surprised to find such an keyboard on eBay for the price. I was beginning to think, that I had to buy a later model, and de-solder the led's, in order to create a "fake" Red-Light. I guess I was in luck. Now the old lady is happy with a working keyboard, in really good shape.

Now I only need to get a complete shield, get a floppy drive or use a Gotek and finally paint this old lady in some nice good color. The restoration is nearing it's end. I have the original box as well, and the Styrofoam things. (minus the one for the TV modulator) And I am missing the original plastic bag as well. The box need some refurbishment as well. Though a paintjob will be something I attend to before fixing the box.


Date: 2018-September-20:
Today I got a hold on the bottom shield for the Amiga500. I did a quick inspection of the shield, cleaned it up, and straightened out what little that had bent. It was not that much, and the job was done in less than 5 minutes.





Something caught my eye. There was a sticker, and if I am reading this correct, then the shield is from a Revision5 system... Yup, the same as this one. Ultimately, this has no influence, on how the system is operating, though it is nice that it fits this way.




I did a quick cleanup, using some alcohol and began to reassemble the board and shield. However. I was missing some of the bolts, that goes onto the ports in the back. So I improvised a bit, and used some flat screws that are for CD-Rom drives and Floppy drives. They do not belong there, however nobody will notice, once the machine is being used.





Final task, was to refit the top shield, and make sure that everything was in order.




Yup... Looks decent and good enough for me. There are so much that I can do extra. Like painting some parts of the shield. Yet to me, I can live with the shield not being in 100 percent mint condition. It is an old machine, and though she looks better now, I want to keep her looking clean yet used and worn to some degree. No shame in showing your age, old lady. 😀

More to come, as I keep working on her. She is in dire need of a Floppy drive or a Gotek drive. What I will choose in the end, are still open to me. Most likely, I will go for the Gotek solution. As this machine has to go into the closet, and in some 15 or 17 years from now, I will give her to one of my children.

I need to get a trapdoor lid as well. And since I am going to give her some paint, then I can just as well go for a 3D-Printed replica. I need to source a mouse and find a power supplu solution. Finally I need to find a plastic bag for the machine it self. However. I do own a complete set of the manuals on my native language. The original box is water damaged, and unless I can find one in good or at least decent shape, then I will see if I can fix it up. At least just a tiny bit.


Date: 2018-October-11:
A couple of months ago, I bought this replacement drive for an Amiga model 500, and it was dead on arrival. So I had the shop ship me a replacement drive. It took approx one month for the new one to arrive, from the day I wrote them and complained. I will not disclose who they are, as I think it is not fair for them, if other customers have had better luck. 

Yesterday I got this replacement drive, in the mail, and I started to wonder if it will do better in this project, than the Amiga500 I am going to upgrade with a TerribleFire-530 accelerator (that machine already have a scan-doubler, and Kickstart switch with 1.3 and 3.1). And so I began to mount the replacement drive in this refurbishing project of an ”Revision5-Version3” machine. And I ran into trouble’s with these modded PC drives, once again. Damn it…

The problem was, that once the machine is turned on, the drive clicks one time, and then it will not boot any disks. If I turn on the machine with a disk in the drive, then it will boot that disk.

As it turns out, the drive is an Alps drive. And I have these converter cables, that turns any PC drive into a fully working Amiga drive. Minus the drive speed. Well… At least that is what systest will tell me time after time.







I still have to use that original bracket that were attached to the original Epson drive, so I cleaned that up, and it is ready for mounting under the replacement drive.



So I took the top cover and moved it to a regular PC drive, and reused the 3D-Printed eject button. That way I can just use the converter cable, and I have a fully working Amiga Disk Drive. Sweet…. I insulated the PCB that are on the cable, and voilà… I have my (nearly) fully working replacement solution. Nice.
 



First fit of the drive seems like it was doing ok. It looked ok and worked ok. Perfect…
There were one slight problem more. If I put on the top cover of the case, the drive would make some horrible scouring noises.
 



It turned out to be the eject button that had too much material on it. So I heated up my old worn out solder iron (yes, I have a newer one) and simply took off some of that plastic. And after a couple of tests, the Amiga500 has a new drive solution that are working beautifully. The problem is load time, and I need to take off additional material on the bottom of the drive slot/crack on the top cover. Disks are scouring against the cover, as the drive is mounted one to two millimetres too low. I did take off some extra material on the metal shield on the drive it self. This was to make sure that it was not the top cover pressing down on the drive it self. It is not the most beautiful result, yet with the top cover on, it is not visible at all. Anyway… It is working, and I am happy enough with the result.
 



Next up, I have to make a replacement solution for the taps that usually keep the keyboard from sliding down in the case. The original ones are broken off. And then I have to find a power solution, find an extra mouse, a new trapdoor cover and finally do a paint job of the case. It looks absolutely horrible regarding that yellow plastic. And with a golden replacement badge, and the right colour, it might actually become a good looking old lady.

Date: 2018-October-12:
I started to rebuild the clips that normally keep the keyboard on the right spot. Without them, the keyboard will slide down, and the old lady will look like her teeth came loose. What I did, was to move the keyboard in place, carefully remove the top cover and mark the spot with a marker pen. Then I took a plastic lid, and cut out pieces that will work as replacement clips. I used some super glue to keep them in place.



Then I reached for the ABS "cement" once again (the one I made for welding the top lid back together), and carefully spread some over the plastic clips. Yet again, it does not look good, yet with the top cover on, the job looks decent and good. The blue colour will be of no issue, once I get to the point of having spraypainted the case. I think the result are good enough, and I am satisfied with the result. The keyboard seems to be on the correct location inside the case.



The cement have hardened over night, and I will put her aside for now. Trapdoor covers are easy to find, and not the most expensive. All in all, she is functioning now. Just need that little finishing touches now.

Date: 2018-December-08:
A couple of days ago, I received the last piece of spare part. It was the trapdoor lid/cover that I found on eBay. I chose a dirty one, as it was cheaper and I have no problem cleaning parts my self.




After some cleaning with a brush and soap water, were I used standard dishwasher soap. I used some standard alcohol to remove the last pieces of grime. And I had a decent cover or lid if you like. Looks ok for it's age I guess.




The same day I bought the cover, I found a second hand memory upgrade as well. It was only used by the seller, to check if it was working. So it is basically or practically brand new and was in box with the installation manual. So I decided to buy it for this Amiga. In other words, then it is basically what you would find in any teenagers room, back in the late 1980's. Or rather in every teenagers room, in the homes were teenagers had their own computer. Computers were still an exotic thing between 1987 and 1990.






So there I have it... A restored Amiga500 Revision-5, model-3 machine. With red light keyboard as it was originally sold, and only the kickstart upgraded from 1.2 to 1.3 and 512k extra memory. Just as gamers used to have their Amiga500. I will be adding more pictures in the future. Once I get that floppy drive raised 1 to 1,5 millimetre, and when I have painted the case a nice colour.

Don't talk trash behind the nerd's back.

I remember a time back, in the year of 1995. That was the year, were I lived on my own, for the first time. It was the year, on wich I was studying computers. Both hardware and software. The year in wich I had a small room to share with a roommate, sharing a tiny dorm room of 12 square meters. And the year, in wich I had much fun poking around with the local network that was kind of improvised. It was a giant mess of a snakepit, that network. Wich was basically build up with coaxial cables. It was not one giant network and whenever people that attended the same class, was living on that hallway, they basically created a new network. That was then linked to every other networks, in order for people to access each others small network's. And it was all done with MS-Dos-6.22 or MS-Dos-6.22 with Windows 3.11 for workgroups on top of it......

Then Windows95 came..... (And new people have moved in on the dorm)

Now we are in June/July of 1995, and the new people have moved in, the old coaxial networks have been replaced with a 100 megabit twisted pair network. Sadly it was not switches that were used. The fuckers installed hub's instead, just to be able to get that 100 megabit. As if.... Because people were cheap, and they only bought 10 megabit card's.

Amongst those people, there were one giant stupid asshat. He cheated in every lan-game that he joined on the network. He spread virus on the network and he basically talked trash behind peoples backs. Untill one day... One day, we all found out about his sequrity on his Windows95 machine. He had shared the entire C-Drive with both read and write permissions enabled. And when that information had circled a couple of angry nerds, his machine were no more.

It turned out, that "we" had copied all the contend from his drive, burned it on a cd-rom, copied it to a blank harddrive and made a tape-backup. Pretty much 3 identical copies.
Then we blanked his harddrive and shipped the tape and the cdrom to him, at the same dorm as we all lived in, using the postal service. Yup.... He was only living 3 doors away. Basically... He did not loose any data. We just made him unable to use his computer for a number of days... Yeah... Don't talk trash behind the nerds back, when you'r sequrity is that shitty. Kind of revenge of the nerd's or something. :-D

Dual-Booting

Dual booting a system.... Hmmm.... What's that, you might ask.
Well. Dual-Booting is a fancy smancy word for having two ore more operatingsystem's on the same computer, were each operatingsystem can be loaded from a menu, whenever the machine is started or being rebooted.

It is, however, not a way of starting up multiple operating system's at the same time.
That is called virtualization, and is a totally different beast.
Another confusion regarding Multi-Boot, is that people have been using the build-in features of Windows-9X system's to prevent the graphical part from being loaded. That is however not a true multiboot. Because it is the exact same operatingsystem that one are dealing with.
It is NOT two different installations. And it can best of all be compared to multitasking in Windows-9X and Os/2. Or even Win-NT compared to Win-9X.

If such operating system as Windows-95 is being put to the test, it is soon realised that this is indeed not multitasking. It is however, something that are named Taskmanager. On the other hand, Windows-NT has true preemptive multitasking. Even Os/2 has that.

Multi-Boot comes in different variaties, and there are loads of program's that can deal with this, and one can use for setting up such desires.
One of the oldest known such piece of software, are the one that came with IBM's Os/2-Warp (possible Os/2 Version 2.1), and it just worked. I came to know this software back in 1995, and it simply made my life easier. At that point in time.
I could spare the primaery installment of MS-Dos-6.22 that I used daily at that time, and I could have Os/2 installed for testing. Just to see if I should give up MS-Dos all together.

Later, I used GRUB and LILO boot loaders (another fancy word for Multi-Booting) whenever I had Linux installed on my machine. I only gave up MS-Dos as late as 2003. Yeah... That was late, I know. I just had a deep need for that OS untill 2003.

The real idea behind a multiboot setup, or an boot manager if you like. Are that the boot-partition are an menu. In some rare cases it is hidden in the MBR of the harddrive. Just not in most cases.... And whenever one of the entries on the menu is choosen, it will first set that partition as active (the bit is set high) and it will start the bootprocess from that partition. This is an advantage that can be utilized when an operating system such as MS-Dos are to be installed. Just set the partition active, using the bootmanager, and reboot the PC with the MS-Dos installer in the floppy drive. Then you press "F5" to avoid setup/boot files and you are let straight into the prompt. Then you start by typing "Format c: /u /s" and it will format and install the basic OS system files. Reboot again and do nothing untill the MS-Dos installer menu asks for user-input.

To multiboot, you need a standalone Boot Manager. Not the one that are supplied by Microsoft, as a build in thingy in Windows-9X. You need a real program.
That can be a program as the one originally supplied alongside Os/2-Warp 3 or 4. The downside is that it can only support up to 8 gigabyte drives. And it costs money. On the other hand, if you have a retro computer with a 4 gigabyte drive, and a copy of Os/2. Then you are really in luck. If you have a larger machine, then download "Ultimate Boot Disc" that contains Extended-Fdisk. If the machine you have, are an old Pentium-166mhz then hunt for version 3.3. You only need at least 60 megabyte RAM in order for it to run propperly.

To set multiboot up, you need to follow this simple guideline... (based on an empty HDD)

1: Boot up ultimate bootdisk and enter "Extended Fdisk".
2: Enter the dropdown menu, and install the bootloader.
3: Create a desired PRIMAERY partition, or more, depending on what you need to install.
4: Highlight each newly created partition, and "add" them as a menu entry.
5: Save and exit/reboot the pc.
6: Try to load an empty partition before each OS installation, the "active flag" will be set.

Hope you had at least some use of this blog entry. I can't support you on this, so you need to find the right tools/software and try this out. It is simple and really easy to do.

Building a Win98 gaming machine, using more modern parts.

Yeah.... Time goes by, you still play that old game? Once in a while something break's and you find that parts are getting more and more expensive. They get more and more difficult to buy and when you find them. Yeah... They are just that fucking expensive. Voodoo3/4/5 cards at 70 to 200 (at least) US Dollars???? FUCK NO!!! Time to get something new on the line. Something a bit more recent, that are plentifull and still cheap. Stuff that can run Win98 and games from the late 90's. Time to save parts that were thrown you'r way at the most fair price of: "Take it for free".

Yes....
Old parts are a treat to find, a treat if they are working and cheap. And a real treat to use.
They are just not that common any more.

Now... Wait! What to choose?? Something are bound not to work with Win98 at all.
(more specific games on Win98)

I did a computer some time ago. A real beast of a Win98 gaming rig. So fast it is rediculous. So fast that UT99 would actually do some kind of wierd ass "reversed" lag. More specific, it would actually run a couple of frames faster than it should. Not allways, just some times in-game. (just like lag, yet the opposite in this case) I fixed that by enabling V-Sync, in order to keep the powers a'bay.

Another thing to consider, is what soundcard and what GFX card to use on a beast like this. One GFX card could be something like a GeForce FX-5XXX (5000-series), and another choice could be something like a Radeon 9000-series. Something in the range of an Radeon 9800 pro. The main differences can be summed up on the GeForce being more compatible than the Radeon, because of the support for more technologies. And the Radeon has the most versatile drivers, when it comes to settings, and the drivers are more easy to work with. Uhh... Yeah... Forgot to mention, that you REALLY need to know nVidia driver's like the pockets in you'r pant's. They COULD be that difficult, as like in: "Giving up and going for Radeon". Just be patient and study those drivers in dept and do a lot of testing. Then it will be all right. (I like Radeon better. Yeah. Im a pussy and fucktard. I know)

For a soundcard, there is no way around PCI cards, because high-end Win98 hardware have ditched the support for ISA. That said, I have personally held a Socket 478-Board, with one single ISA slot. It was around 2009 or 2010. Now.... No ISA slot. No SB16/AWE/Gus/other old school soundcards. Hmmm.... Now what then? Why, here comes 3 possible good sollutions to this horrid dilemma of despair.

You could find an AWE64-D/PCI-something (lovely child, many names), yet they are one of the most difficult cards to come by. The second one is a SB-Live. Though it has it's major downs like bad stereo and no really good SB16 emulation, it has some solid Win98-Drivers and it is cheap as dirt these days. The last would be an Yamaha YMF-724, wich is the possible best one of all three. The midi part just kicks ass, and it is one of the best SB-Pro campatible cards and most of the 3 variants (possible more then 3 variants exists), have a genuine OPL3 (Adlib) core build in to it. YAY!!!

Motherboards... Well... Make shure it has drivers for Win98 and for memmory, you can go for eighter DDR1 or DDR2. Just don't go higher than 512mb. Yet again.... Dirt cheap memmory sollution, if one should pick 512mb DDR1.
My board ran a Sempron Socket-754 at 2ghz, wich just kicked some serious fucking ass, when running an Radeon 9800-XXL (yes, it is out there and is Medion ONLY branded).
Big ass card, runs hot as hell, Radeon-9600 was a better choice, as I feared the 9800 would run so hot that it would die on me.

The motherboard have SATA, so I just used a WD 80gb Harddrive. Fast, low noise and good.




All in all. A great machine, wich I paid nothing more than the equivelant of nearly 15 US Dollars for. Fucking cheap, fucking fast and well.... Too fast. Even cheaper and less powerfull parts can be used. Sooooo...... Happy fucking hunting for cheap parts. Get them now, before those who are in their 20's today, turn's 30 and want to relive their computing youth.

Game's trouble on old hardware.

Whenever a new Windows is released, we all know that old Windows games sometimes stop working the way they should. Even when new hardware is released, some games stop working or develop some issues. Though this is not the case in 99% of the games, there is a problem with few games. I have had my share of issues with two Win98 games, namely "Need For Speed, Porsche Unleashed/2000" and "Unreal Tournament 99".

NFS Porsche:
This game is a bitch, when installed from the original first release edition. Un-patched/Un-updated, this game has a wierd issue with the keyboard and the mouse locking up. And as this was not enough, the game tend to show menu-text's eighter really "washed up/blurred" or not shown at all. Well.... 
This is all related to the choice of GFX card, where nvidia cards greater than Geforce2 have issues running NFS-2000 without any Antiliasing. And whenever AA is applied or cranked up, the lockup problem starts to show earlier and earlier in the game. And yes, there is a fix.
The fix to this is to install "NFS-2000 Update 3.5" and the lockup will disappear. What will not disappear, is the blurred menutext. That is not an issue on Geforce4 ti4200 cards, as it can run the game fine, fluid and beautifull on AAx4. So.... Actually a better setup than say, a TNT2-Ultra running vanilla-NFS-2K. (Duhh!!)

Cards that I have tested, having NO trouble without the update are: 
- TNT2-Pro/Ultra (lower TNT2's perform crappy)
- GF2 (All models, including MX440)
- Radeon-9600 ASUS 128mb AGP
- Matrox G400 DualHead AGP 32mb
- Matrox G400 SingleHead AGP 16mb
- Compaq Voodoo3-3500 AGP (The Compaq OEM model)
- Creative Voodoo2 8mb (both single and SLI setup)
- PowerColor Voodoo2 12mb (100mhz V2-card)

Cards that start working correct WITH the 3.5 update:
- Medion GF4-ti4200 AGP
- Gigabyte Radeon-9550 256mb AGP
- Asus Geforce FX-5200 128mb AGP

So yeah... Update that software. The best solution, just a shame it is not working like intended, when more powerfull cards are chosen for that retro-rig.

Unreal Tournament 99 (the first UT game ever):
This game shure has some trouble, wich in reality, are just minor bugs. These issues are all related to pixels and stuff, not being renderen/shown correctly. Stuff like vertical lines not drawn vertical, when being in the distant. One example is the level "Facing world's" where the enemy tower looks like crap. One other issue, is that things like windows/square lamp's are drawn jaggered and dirty. And yes. You will not have any gameplay trouble. You will be annoyed by those glitches when you are aware that they are present. (I was really annoyed)

The sollution to these trouble's and glitches was plain simple. I just downloaded 3 updates, and installed them one by another. Starting with the oldest, and working my way through them all. And they are small updates/patches, so this is just a small and fast fix. And when I think of the fact, that NFS-2K Version 3.5 requires AAx4 on a GF4 card, and UT99 just looks so much better with AAx4. Well...
Then this is just a big plus, updating those games and running them on such a fast piece of retro-hardware. 

Patches used are:
- 428
- 432
- 436

Final words.... Just update, instead of testing hundreds of different hardware setup's. And boy, do I feel stupid making that mistake of not thinking of updating. (I still feel mighty stupid, having tested all those cards)

Soundcards, MS-Dos and Windows9X

Want to get that retro computer going? Everything seems to be in order! Great, now play that old dos-game. No? What's happening? Let me explain just a bit about soundcards. More questions, then go to Vogons for more information. I promise that it is a good place to source some good information.

Back in the olden and golden days of dos gaming. Computers did not have plug and play. Let me rephrase. IBM compatible PC's did not have plug and play. Amiga's had something called Autoconfigure wich is something a bit like PCI configuration. And let me rephrase myself yet again... It's much better than the first PCI configuration, wich were unstable and missed a feature or two. I clearly remember someone batteling something in his newly bought PCI V1 controller in 1995. And he was like "What a fucking technology, this is not working".

Now... Let me go back to a time before plug and play. and a time before 32bit windows. The year is somewhere around 1992, and you have bought a new and shiny Soundblaster sound card for you'r allmost new and shiny 486 computer. All you have to do, is to install it.
When installing a soundcard back then, the first thing that needed to be done, was to configure the card's resources. As of today, this is all done by the computer. For most people back then, it was frustrating. All this is automated today (99,9% of the time) and make computers boring as fuck at the same time.

Looking forward, to this day. We have computers wich are highly integrated. Even drivers are downloaded by Windows10 and installed. You don't have to do anything at all. (mostly)
In other words. Computers have come a looooong way. And are equally borring, and to be honest. They are NO fun at all. They are just another platform in the line of smartphones and consoles.

Jumping back about 10 years again, there were room for tinkering and you could still do stuff. Computers from that generation, were extremely mass produced. Wich in other words, translates into a fuckload of recycleable IT-equipment, being avaliable for the average recycler. And this means that there are lot's of parts for you to buy at a cheap price. And they are really fast compared to older computers. It's just an old computer. Right?

This is were you fit into this story, as you want to rediscover those old memories of gaming or you are a retro gamer that want to see what the 90's pc games were all about. Because you allready played that NES box to death and want some new kick. Or you are that guy that just love old hardware, old computers and yeah... Stuff like that.

Then you buy that old P4 machine, a nice Soundblaster live card, and begin to install some average WindowsXp or Windows98. And every nice game from Unreal Tournament 99 to Halflife2 are runnig fine and dandy. Sweet.... Now comes the time, when you think that you want to try those old Dos games, and now the trouble starts pouring down like rain. No sound, distorted image quality or even worse. A black screen. And you wonder why.

This is all related to the gear. It is just too new. Even 10 to 15 year old computers are for most parts incompatible when it comes to old Dos games. And it is now, that you need to make a choice. Eighter use the program called DosBOX or get an even older computer that supports soundcards that are ISA Bus based. Yes... That old type of 8/16-Bit 1980's technology. Most PCI bus based soundcards can not be used in Dos.

Shure some cards can be used in Dos. All you need is to load a small program, that makes the PCI soundcard emulate an old Soundblaster 16. The problem is, that it need's a memory manager in order to make it work. 
Though later dos games required memory managers, the first dos games can not run with a memory manager. Wich means that PCI soundcards can not be used for dos as such. (It's cool enough if you want to play Doom)

In between the times of WinXP gaming and Dos/Win9X gaming. You could actually find a type of PCI soundcards, that took this problem by the balls. A technology called SB-Link, was created by Creative Labs. Other companies called this technology for PC/PCI-Link. Roughly speaking. This is a technology, that allows soundcards for the PCI slot, to be able to use IRQ's and DMA's the same way as ISA cards does.

I have found a couple of motherboards that supports this technology, and a couple of soundcards that has it too. And tested it. The result is really grimm and not really good. The two boards that I have tested with, are the Intel VC820 motherboard, and the Epox MVP3 motherboard. Those two motherboards are from the early and the late era of SB-Link. And the soundcards that I have tested with, are an Yamaha YMF724 based, and a Crystal 4614-CM based card. Both with a SB-Link header on them. None of the 4 combinations would work at all, in pure MS-Dos. That is MS-Dos-6.22 and not some Windows-based Dos (MS-Dos-7) Both with and without the SB-Link-Cable.

People reporting that this is working with a card like the Yamaha YMF724, have all reported that it will work on a 440BX chipset based board. A board like the Asus P2B. In other words. The Intel VC820 might be too new a board and the Epox MVP3-C might just be too early a board. Just don't get those two boards for SB-Link. On those two it is completely shit.

The Intel VC820 is great in Win98SE, with a Matrox G400. A Powercolor Voodoo2 12mb and a SB-Live. You just need the correct drivers and forget everything about Dos games.

The Epox MVP3-C on the other hand, is really great in MS-Dos-6.22, running a Pentium-133mhz, Cirrus Logic CL5446 PCI, SB16-ISA and Gravis Ultrasound.

If you have read this far. Then great. I have stolen some of you'r time. Or given you something to think about and possible prevented you from spending cash that you can use for two good steaks and a bottle of red wine. I eighter apologize or I feel good about my self.

To wrap this up, in a few words......
Unless you want to spend cash in order to investigate and test the same shit as I have done. Stick to ISA soundcards and 20 to 25 year old hardware for Dos games. For Win98 gaming, stick to something like P3 and PCI sound cards. And finally build two systems. One Dos and one Windows.

Last but not least. The day that 386/486/P1 class hardware is all dead and gone. Just grab a copy of DosBox. As a matter of fact. If you hate tinkering with old outdated hardware that are singing it's last song these present years. Grab a copy of DosBox. It's not perfect, yet ok for people that don't care for emulated sound and graphic standards.

Old eyecandy

What do you get, when you take graphic artists, musicians, and mix them with programmer's? Well....
You get a demogroup. Demogroups made up a subgenre in computing. (They still do)

When I started to get into computing as a hobby, outside my childhood home. I was exposed to demo's around the year 1992. Computers was my hobby from around 1986 or 1988 though, when my parents bought a Unisys 80286 machine. (A little side-note)

In 1992 I saw my first demo called "State of the art" by a group called Spaceballs. This demo was awesomme, it ran on an Amiga500 and it just hit me like a train. I was completely mesmerized.

 

Today, this demo just seems kind of primitive, yet it was THE shit to have on a 880 kilobyte Amiga formatted 3.5inch floppy disc. And looking at the specs. for the Amiga500 today, it is actually pretty good. The Amiga500 had a 7.14mhz (yes. megaherz, not giga). It had 512kilobyte of memory and everything was loaded from a floppy as standard. Though harddrives were sold, at the same price as the machine it self.

Where do demo's originated from? The answer is actually simple. Demo's originated from the Commodore64 and other 8-Bit machines. Back then, there were copyprotection on most games and programs. As well as today.
And people began "cracking" those games, in order to pirate them. And in many cases sell for a profit. And to stiffen off the competition, they started to advertise in a form of simple cracking-intro or in other words. A graphical presentation. They called it for a Cracktro, the word's "Cracking" and "Intro".
 
 

Time went by, and eventually the concept of Cracktro's evolved into a standalone presentation. Dubbed "Demo's", and new young artists/programmers saw a potential for a new kind of hobby. They started to compete big time.
The legazy from the old cracktro days, can still be found in moderne key generators.
Using some elements of C64 graphics and music style.

New technology eventually pushed the Amiga out, as the number one platform on wich to create demo's. I guess it started around 1993/95, as some remarkable demo's for the pc were released. Before that, only a couple of demo's on the pc platform is noteworthy to mention here. (I will do it anyway)

The first one is "Crystal Dreams" from a group called Triton. A nice little one, that has some 3D-Graphics. The second one is "Second Reality" from a group called Future Crew.

 

Today, the demoscene is not what it was. Well... It is still awesomme products they produce. New groups have come and old ones have left. Only a small handfull of groups, like Razor1911 is still active. And yes. They still do some good shit.

A time before.....

Today. When gamers play together, it is eighter over the internet, or some Lan-Party. Yet back in the day's, we called it "Data-Weekend" or "Computer-Weekend". And yes. We had our share of fun.

I don't really know anything about how schoolchildren are using computers for fun, when gathering together now a days. I only remember how we did it back then. Back in the day's when only a handfull of people were using computers. A time when the most exciting technology in the home, was turntable's, cd-player and vhs recorder.

At my school, well in every publich school's, there was something called "The youth school". Wich were an offer from the state in wich the older schoolchildren could learn a skill during evening time. Mostly children in 8'th to 10'th grade. One could learn stuff like making photograph's, repairing moped's or learn different computer skills.
I signed up for the computer course. Wich I never ever regretted doing. It was so much fun.

It was around 1990, and all the gamers had Amiga 500's, and the more tech oriented geeks had Pc's.
The day I showed up for the first time, I quickly learned about the Amiga VS. Pc battle that raged on at that time. (some readers might actually remember this)

This "Data-Club" as it was known, held a big event a couple of times each year, wich was known as "Data-Weekend", were we would lay down our arms and gather in a big hall. For a whole weekend.
We would sleep whenever we just fell asleep from exation. We would eat whatever we wanted, and we would play games all weekend long. Not just computer games. Competitions like basketball and stuff like that were held too.
When computers and outdoor activities were not enough, there were an improvised theatere in wich we could watch all the hottest blockbusters. (On VHS of course)
And finally. If we needed something to keep us awake. Then the kitchen was open 24/7 if a fresh cup of coffee was in need. Yeah... It was totally awesomme drinking 5 cup's of black wakeup-juice at 4am in the morning.

Other activities back then, was participating in sensual soccer competitions. Gaming with other people around their's or your computer. Or my favorite... Body crashing. Sounds wierd? Well... Just watch the following little clip, and you will see what I am talking about.


 

Another nice activity, was disc-throwing, in wich you had to throw a 5'25 inch floppy. It then evolved to 3.5 inch disks, then to floppy drives and I think they use harddrives now.

I have to remind you now, that this was a different time back then. When there were no real copy protection, no drm (thank's for the shit), no police raid's, no extra tax on blank media's (thanks for the shit again) and absolutely NO morale regarding piracy. It was like... Well. To say it bluntly and square. It was a time, much like "the wild west" back then.

We copied everything and anything. Shure we have heard about police raid's in places like England, Germany or any other major city. They were just words for us young punks. We simply did not care, and even the adult's encouraged us to copy all we could. They just yelled "Copy time", and we all knew that every other activites were put on standby for one hour. Mmmm.... Good times, good times. Hehe.
I might get some comments now, regarding lost revenues and lost earnings and stuff like the industry are loosing money. And I must remind you readers, that this was in 1988 to 1992 and well... The industry did survive.
We see new games every day, don't we? Yeah... We were just punks, giving game makers a hard time.

On sunday, the party was over. We packed all our machines. All floppy's were put away and we started to clean. We all went home and slept untill monday. And it all became normal grey every-day again.

The sound of the 90's




Back in the 90's, computer evolved at an alarming pace. And it was said, that when you bought a computer, the value was reduced by half, the moment you walk out the door. Actually.... The fact was, that faster and better component's were introduced all the time. (allmost on weekly basis in certain field's)

The soundcard. Once a luxury component on the PC-Market, was heavily refined and made better during the 90's. Once a mono card, capeable of nothing more than synthetic music, were finally evolved into a state of the art component in 1998/99. And finally could be found as a sort of standard equipment. (onboard, aprox' 1998/99)

The most widespread standard for music, were OPL-2/3 (Known as Adlib), and the most widespread standard for sound effects were "Soundblaster". There were other standards used, standards such as Gravis Ultrasound.
They were too expensive for the general public, who just wanted cheap sollutions.

For a standard setup in the years of 1994 to 1996, we had something like a Soundblaster 16 if decent quality was needed. Some people stuck to slightly older cards, such as Sound Galaxy cards that had a bit lower quality.

Now.
I am not going into much details about the different soundcards, or all the technical aspects. I am just going to give some examples on how PC-Sound evolved back then.
And what better way, than using youtube and some of the most played games back then.




OPL-2/3:
Adlib Standard, was what started this whole music and sound effects on the pc. Before that, nothing was possible, other than a simple beeper-sound. (wich was horrible and bad)
It was a cheap sollution embraced by a whole army of soundcard makers. And thereby became the standard for sound on the Pc for many years to come.





GUS:
Gravis Ultrasound from Canada, Changed everything. The only real problem for this standard to take on the world. Was it's pricetag here in my country. As everybody wanted the cheapest possible sollution of them all. I reckon that this was the case around the world too. This standard however, was embraced by musician's and people at the demo scene.
I have choosen one game this time, and two demo's wich really makes the GUS shine.

 


AWE-32/64:
Creative Labs realized that they wanted to make something like the GUS, and created the "AWE" line of soundcards. Compared to GUS, they sound a lot alike. And most people just bought an AWE-Something. It could be the AWE32 model whatever or the AWE32 model whatever that was choosen. In retrospective, we now know what cards are the best of them all. (it's the small differences that makes the big difference in the end)
Speaking of differences. Just check eBay for "Sound Blaster CT3900" vs. "Sound Blaster CT3600" and you will begin to see what I am talking about here.

In the end, just before Creative started to shift towards PCI slot (sadly), they launched the last line of ISA cards (AWE64), wich are good cards compared to what they have done before. Especially the AWE64-Gold.
They are not in any way perfect. Just really good cards.

 


Final notes and thoughts:
There are tons and tons of other sound solutions in the 90's. Some were really low grade cheap ones and some were really expensive. And still are pretty hefty in price.
Those solutions are Roland or Yamaha MIDI modules. Yes they sound really great, wich a plus. Yet they were not that great for gaming in a broad sense. You really needed to have the exact module for the exact game. Otherwise the sound would not play correct.

Don't get me wrong on this. If you have the money (we are talking big money), and the space to store them. They are THE ABSOLUTELY BEST solution for music in games from the 90's.

There are tons and tons of information out there on the internet, for those who just realized that new hardware won't cut it for old/older games. And need to build an old computer. Or just upgrading an ancient machine for this purpouse. Yeah... What to do? Where to start?

A lot of people start by looking at videos of some duchebag who is killing old hardware, by handeling it on the nylon carpet and wearing nylon based clothes. Not wearing any anti static equipment. There are other places than youtube on the internet for these type of matters. Places were people are telling you to be carefull with the old precious hardware, and WILL help you. When building a new machine is the next new personal project for you.

If you do not know where to start. Then you are in a bit of luck. Actually a lot of luck, as I have gathered three good places to start some vintage-time.

2 x Voodoo2



I got myself some Voodoo2 cards  a couple of weeks ago. I did buy a 12mb PowerColor before I purchased these two cards. Yet no second PowerColor was avaliable at that time.
And I think that a second one will be extremely hard to come by (unless a reader wants to sell his).

Now. What can I do with these babies? Well...
I think I will install them on a K6-III-400 system, sporting eighter a Matrox G400 or a Compaq TNT2 Ultra. As I feel that they are the top dog amoungst cards for the Socket Super 7 platform. Shure I could do better by installing a V3-3500 or 12mb V2-SLI. The problem is, that I do not have an extra V3-3500, and I don't have the extra PowerColor V2.
Well... Into my GA-5AX system they will go.

Why did I buy them then?
Back in the late 90's, more specific in 1998. I dreamt of owning a Voodoo2, and the dream kept on until Geforce6 was released. Then I finally moved on, wanting more and more powerfull hardware. Until I eventually decided to get back to my roots of computing.
I have my modern laptop, on were I use the internet, reading email's. Modern stuff like that.... What I really needed, was to get back into the classic pc-stuff. Things like setting EMM386 and playing around with IRQ's DMA's and stuff like that.
Then I began searching for old stuff. Old hardware and taking up my old and not forgotten skills of setting jumpers. Configuring config.sys/autoexec.bat. I just began enjoying my childhood joy of old hardware you just have to know and configure on your own.

It all escalated, to the point were my collection of hardware is allmost covered from 1994 to 1999. And this is were these old V2 babies come in. I have them, and they are hard to get. Unless of course. You are willing to go on eBay and pay more than 8 times what they really are worth.
(if you ask my personal view on what they are worth)
